Martha’s Vineyard has a few Oversand Permits. Cape Poge and Leland Beach, All Over and Norton Point Town Permit. Each provides unprecedented access to the Vineyard’s famous sandy New England coastline.

North Point Town Permit
Purchased through the town website, the Norton Point beach sticker provides beach driving access to the Island’s South Shore in Edgartown. The gatehouse and sticker pick-up is located at 555 Katama Rd in Edgartown.
Oversand beach driving on Norton Point, located on Martha’s Vineyard, offers a unique and thrilling way to explore the island’s stunning coastal scenery. Spanning approximately two and a half miles, Norton Point Beach is a dynamic barrier beach connecting Edgartown and Katama to Chappaquiddick Island. To drive on this stretch of beach, you will need a four-wheel-drive (4WD) vehicle equipped with low-pressure tires to navigate the soft, sandy terrain effectively. It is essential to lower the tire pressure to around 15-20 PSI to prevent getting stuck and to reduce the impact on the sand.
Driving along Norton Point Beach allows visitors to immerse themselves in the island’s natural beauty, characterized by rolling dunes, pristine sandy shores, and expansive views of the Atlantic Ocean and Katama Bay. The area is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts, as it is home to various bird species, including piping plovers and terns, especially during the nesting season. The beach also offers excellent opportunities for surfcasting, shell collecting, and enjoying the serene, unspoiled landscape. Whether you are an avid angler or simply seeking a peaceful spot to relax and take in the breathtaking coastal views, Norton Point Beach provides a memorable and picturesque experience.

Getting to the Mytoi Gatehouse (41 Dike Rd in Edgartown)
The Mytoi Gatehouse and Chappy beach driving are technically on another Island. In order to get over to Chappaquiddick you and your vehicle will use the Iconic Chappy Ferry (53 Daggett Ave, Edgartown, MA). During busy summer days the ferry usually has a queue running up Daggett street (see screenshot below for the Queue map). There are plenty of signs posted around town, on where to go to start queuing for the ferry. At the ferry, users can either use the kiosk at the dock or pay in cash onboard for ferry fare. A note from the author, carry some cash. It makes the whole process more seamless. Once on the ferry the attendant will come to the driver window and ask for fare. The Ferry is $15 for a round trip. Once paid, the attendant will give you a laminated ticket, which you will exchange for your ride back to Edgartown. After a short ride across the harbor, drive straight roughly 2.5 miles to the Gatehouse.
